The Academy Ball is one of Philadelphia’s oldest established social traditions. The white tie gala celebrated its 157th year at The Academy of Music with performances from the Philadelphia Orchestra lead by Yannick Nézet-Séguin, featuring the stunning Jill Scott and a surprise appearance from pianist Robert Glasper.
Roxy at Vanity Salon did an unbelievable job with my hair. I was inspired by the faux bob I’ve seen worn by Kerry Washington and Marion Cotillard on the red carpet, but I wanted to do something a little more adventurous. I borrowed my mom’s jewelry (thanks, mom) and asked Roxy to string it around my head (yes, I was nervous that it would fall out, but Roxy pinned it in there very securely).
Now on to the dress…
Last year a wore a very architectural black gown by Black Halo. Looking back on it, I wasn’t crazy about the construction or the fabric. It was very severe and stiff. I couldn’t even lift my arms above my bust, which is pretty inconvenient when you’re trying to dance or hug somebody.
This year, I wanted a more classic look, so I chose this simple red peplum gown by Badgley Mischka. Apparently navy was the color of the season, but I missed the memo on that one.

Posing with my musical hero, the talented Robert Glasper.
And then there was the dancing…
